Let’s see how they score us! – the brief guide for IELTS scoring

School day’s exam preparation will most probably be based on blueprints right?

We look at the marks allotted for each chapter and lessons and learn accordingly to get through the examination. That’s the same here. If you know how you’ll be scored, it’ll be easy for you to prepare right?

 

That’s what you are going to read about.

 

You’ll be scored between 0 to 9 and also .5 scores. For Instance, your score is not just the whole number but you might be marked 7.5 or 8.5 as well, even .5 makes a huge difference. You’ll be scored separately for each skill and you’ll receive an average score.

Some facts about how your scoring is rounded to the nearest 0.5 or a whole number.

 

  • If your average overall score is 6.25, it will be increased to 6.5
  • If your score is 7.75 then it will be increased to 8
  • If your score is 5.1 then it will be rounded to 5

 

Listening Scores

 

Listening test will consist of 40 questions and you will be marked one point for each right question and if you get all the 40 right or even 39, then your band score will be 9. If 37 to 38 are right then your band score will be 8.5. Band with will be 8 if you answer 35-36 right.

 

Reading Scores

The reading tests will also contain 40 questions and you’ll be marked one for each right question and you get all the question right you’ll be marked 9 band score. The Academic and General training reading tests are graded on the same scale however, academic tests are a bit difficult as it contains difficult vocabulary and greater complexity of style. If you could manage to answer 35 right, your band score will be 8 and 7 if you answer 30 right and 6 if you could manage to answer 23 right.

 

Writing Scores

There are four criteria’s that the examiners use to mark your band score. They are

  • Task Achievement (Task 1), Task Response (Task 2)
  • Coherence and cohesion
  • Lexical resource
  • Grammatical range and accuracy

 

Speaking Scores

Here the examiner marks your band score according to the following criteria. They are:

  • Fluency and Coherence
  • Lexical Resource
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy
  • Pronunciation
